Book Name - NCERT Class VIII: SOCIAL AND POLITICAL LIFE – III

Description

The book has a focus on rule of law and social justice. The units are devoted to the following topics: the Indian Constitution, the Parliament, the Judiciary, Social Marginalisation and the Economic Presence of Government. In this book, students learn what law is and what is meant by rule of law. They also learn that often laws are not enough and people continue to struggle to have their fundamental rights realised long after laws have been passed to guarantee these.

The index is as follows:

Unit One: The Indian Constitution and Secularism

·         Chapter 1: The Indian Constitution : Discusses about the historical background of constitution, its purpose and key features.

Note: Read with the CHAPTER 1: CONSTITUTION: WHY AND HOW? Of Class XI.

·         Chapter 2: Understanding Secularism : Discusses about the concept of Secularism, features of Indian Secularism and how it is different from that of other democratic countries.

Unit Two: Parliament and The Making of Laws

·         Chapter 3: Why do we need a Parliament? : Discusses the meaning and role of Parliament.

Note: Read with the CHAPTER 5: LEGISLATURE of Class XI

·         Chapter 4: Understanding Laws : Discusses the several provisions in the Constitution that would establish the rule of law.

Unit Three: The Judiciary

·         Chapter 5: Judiciary : Discusses the significance of judiciary, its role and concept of independent judiciary.

UPSC 2012: What is the provision to safeguard the autonomy of the Supreme Court of India?

1.   While appointing the Supreme Court Judges, the President of India has to consult the Chief Justice of India.

2.   The Supreme Court Judges can be removed by the Chief Justice of India only.

3.   The salaries of the Judges are charged on the Consolidated Fund of India to which the legislature does not have to vote.
