Description

Chapter 1: Crafts in the past – Discusses the role of craftspersons from the earliest periods of recorded history which has played role in development of the community.

Chapter 2: Colonial rules and crafts – Discusses how the crafts developed under the colonial rule in the seventeenth century which resulted in a steady home market and a worldwide reputation for Indian crafts.

Chapter 3: Mahatma Gandhi and self-sufficiency – Discusses Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas about self-sufficiency and handicrafts and wanted to revive these villages, their craft economy and their practices and make them represent a system that was completely different from Western societies based on industry.

Chapter 4: Handloom and Handicrafts revival – Discusses how the handicrafts and handloom sector get revived after independence, through the schemes introduced by the Central and State Governments.

Chapter 5: The Crafts Community today – Discusses the reasons why the condition and the status of the crafts community today is so poor even after the efforts of the government of India.

Chapter 6: Production and Marketing – Discusses the various traditional production, distribution and marketing strategies that are available to craft communities in India.

Chapter 7: Crafts Bazaar – Discusses how in a rapidly urbanising India, does one strengthen the link between the rural crafts community and the urban consumer.

Note: The chapters in this book are more analytical in nature, hence useful for Civil Services (Main) Examination.
